Persuasive column from Steve Outing in Editor & Publisher (available to read free online) about his decision to stop subscribing to his local newspaper, the Boulder Daily Camera.

He notes he feels a bit guilty, given his support for the newspaper industry in general and his awareness that it’s suffering from declining readership, higher printing costs, etc. But why pay close to $200 a year if all the content is online for free for a product that’s getting thinner and thinner?

With my latest bill from the Washington Post buried on the coffee table, and having just this morning lugged out a box of mostly unread newspapers to the recycling bin on the curb, I’m feeling inclined to agree. If I want to savor the crinkle and feel of paper, I'd rather just read something from my barely manageable stack of magazines.
