This is an idea that’s about 40 years late, but still welcome. This week’s Pasarela Cibeles fashion show in Spain has kicked out models who are too thin, leaving waifs with a body mass index below 18 out in the cold. For those who don’t know the BMI back and forth, that would mean a model who is 5’10” must weigh at least 132 pounds.
The limits at this show are unfair for models who are naturally scrawny, but setting an example that you CAN be too thin may help young women who develop anorexia trying to make their bodies look like Nicole Richie’s.
Leonor Perez Pita is the director of Madrid’s fashion week and said she hopes she starts a trend.
“I would be very pleased if this sets a precedent and that other fashion shows in the world follow in our footsteps,” she
said.
She’s been criticized, with observers saying it is just PR, but she denies this.
“The Pasarela Cibeles does not need publicity, it is quite well known enough already,” Pita said, denying the move was just a publicity stunt.
