How do you use it?
It's a Web-based portal. We log in and it shows us just the news coverage we want to see organized in the way we want to see it.
You can filter to generate coverage reports that focus on certain publications, publications in specific geographic areas, or on specific topics. You can change how it delivers coverage reports if you want in a really simple, easy interface. The system also pulls and delivers all the data and analytics related to your coverage.
The guys at PublicRelay are available whenever I call, and if there's a problem they're on it right away. Customer service is exceptional – we're very impressed with them.
How does it serve your business needs?
It's really important for us to keep track of the company's coverage both domestically and internationally – primarily on key topics. We're a huge company and there are many current affairs topics and sensitive things we need to stay on top of.
PublicRelay's tracking is really accurate, and that's very important. A previous vendor I used was providing data that wasn't really accurate, and I didn't feel comfortable giving that information to our executives.
In addition to keeping track of certain issues, we use PublicRelay to track share of voice. Accuracy is critical and PublicRelay does a great job with share of voice analysis.
Every morning I see everything about CSC. If I want a report, I just have to click a couple of buttons and it puts it into a beautiful format that I can send to whoever I want, so it's a huge time saver. Last April we launched a PR campaign around cloud computing and one of our new offerings, and we weren't sure how much coverage we'd get. The PublicRelay report showed more coverage than anticipated, and I was able to create a round-up report right then and share all the great coverage with internal clients who oversee cloud computing. This is nothing new for PR professionals – the speed and ease with which I was able to do it is the big difference.
I also put together quarterly executive reports that include charts, graphs, and other data I get from PublicRelay, including share of voice comparisons with a handful of top competitors on certain subjects like cloud computing or cyber security.

We access it from a secure Web-based portal.
Accuracy, great customer service, and simplicity.
There's also great ROI for us because the analysts at PublicRelay act as an extension of my team. They read every article on CSC and uncover tone and importance and then organize it and send it to me. It's great because I don't have to have someone junior on my staff doing all that work.
They also eliminate all the clutter I don't want to see in a coverage report – like employment opportunities or press release coverage. I want to see real news coverage so I can work on the really important, hot topics and not all that front-end administrative work.
What are the main drawbacks?
There really aren't any. The ability to access some coverage without a paid subscription or firewall – that's always a challenge, but it's no fault of PublicRelay.
What would you like to see improved / added?
There's only one – a mobile app – and I'm sure they're working on it now.
PublicRelay's staff really is above and beyond in terms of customer service. We have weekly or biweekly meetings because they just want to check in and ask how they can improve. If we mention something, by the next week they've fixed it.
