The top 30 newspaper Web sites had, for the most part, a good April, according to statistics provided by Nielsen Online and reported by Editor & Publisher.

The winners: DallasNews.com (The Dallas Morning News), up 88% from April 2007; OregonLive.com, surging 63% in the past year; The Politico, up 67%, no doubt due to election interest; WashingtonTimes.com, up 16%; and BaltimoreSun.com, jumping 38% year-over-year.

The losers: Chron.com (Houston Chronicle), down 38% since last year; AZCentral.com (The Arizona Republic) down 14%.

Also of note: Traffic at The Wall Street Journal’s Web site, which is largely gated, grew 37% last month over April 2007, but the number of monthly visitors dropped to 4.7 million in April from 6.8 million the month before.
