Cigna is the latest major marketer to combine its marketing and communications departments into one unit. Maggie FitzPatrick, the company's CCO, said last week that she will leave the health insurer. Global CMO Lisa Bacus will lead the integrated team following FitzPatrick's departure in August.

In recent months, SAP hired Victoria Clarke as head of corporate affairs after deciding to integrate global communications and marketing, while Visa global head of corporate relations Doug Michelman exited the company as it merged the two groups. Allstate and FedEx have also combined their marketing and communications teams this year.

Communications leaders told PRWeek last week that it is crucial for CCOs to retain their influence in the C-suite in the midst of such combinations.
