The Food and Drug Administration has approved a drug from Bayer AG to treat certain types of advanced prostate cancer. The decision took place three months earlier than expected.

The drug, known by the brand name Xofigo, treats prostate cancer that has spread to the bones, but not other organs, in men who have previously received separate therapy designed to lower testosterone. It will cost $69,000 for a complete therapy course, which involves six injections at four-week intervals.

Bayer says it may have a "blockbuster" product, which have been hard to come by in recent years after generic offerings robbed many drugs of once-high profit margins. Bloomberg estimates that the injection may generate $802 million in sales in 2017.
