The role of GOP super PACs and whether the millions they are investing in political ads is moving the needle in terms of guiding people to vote for Mitt Romney over Barack Obama is making headlines this week.
Some media outlets have noticed that various PACs and other anti-Obama groups seem uncannily coordinated with ads running around the country utilizing the same statistics of employment and fiscal debt numbers.
“This sharpened message is providing the Romney campaign crucial cover as it works to raise more money to pay for advertising of its own and recover from its recent stumbles,” according to the New York Times. “By coordinating their advertising purchases, the outside groups are maintaining a continuous presence on the air for the next few weeks while plugging many of the holes in Mr. Romney's ad schedule.”
Reports also say Republican super PACs “are about to face a potentially existential test of their reach and impact” as the evidence is starting to show that even though they are outspending Obama's re-election campaign most months, “the results for Republicans are muddled — at best,” as most polls show the race being tight or Obama in the lead.
Finally, others are saying that one key PAC, The American Crossroads, may decrease its funding for Romney following the fallout from his 47% comments.
“Sources familiar with Crossroads' spending say that there are no plans for changes now,” according to Politico. But “other sources” say they are not ruling out cutting back on Romney campaign funding soon, if Obama outshines Romney in the upcoming debates.
