A federal probe into whether Medtronic illegally promoted Infuse, a
bone-graft product for unapproved uses, has drawn to a close. Since 2008, the US
Justice Department and the Massachusetts US attorney have investigated possible
misconduct and found none,
according to the company.
For the three months ending in January, Infuse's profits were down 30%.
In other healthcare news, a US Food and Drug Administration advisory panel unanimously recommended approval of an HIV
test that can be taken at home. The panel members said they believe the benefits of the test kit
Oraquick outweighed the risks. The diagnostic detects the presence of HIV, the
virus precursor to AIDS, in 20 minutes. The FDA does not have to side with the
panel's recommendation but usually does.
