'Tis the season for Top 10 lists and with social media as a huge trend in 2009, there are inevitably several focused on that, including ones from the
Los Angeles Times, the
South Florida Sun-Sentinel, and
360 Days in a PR Life (though we're still waiting for part 2). While the
LA Times talked about
District 9's use of social media, it didn't mention the social media success of
Paranormal Activity, which shows up on the
Sun-Sentinel's list. Ashton Kutcher versus CNN, Susan Boyle's success, and the Burger King Whopper Sacrifice show up and also demonstrate the pop culture power of social media. But the Hudson River plane crash updates and the Iran election protests showed the more serious side of social media.
Is there a major social media moment that was left off these lists? Oprah's
foray into Twitter didn't turn into much and not all Catholics followed the
Pope as he moved online. But I especially enjoyed covering NASA's
Tweet-up, watching The Bob Woodruff Foundation
demonstrate Twitter fundraising, and discovering how sports teams and leagues are
using more social media.
