With
95% of precincts reporting, California's Proposition 8 is
currently passing with 52% of the vote this morning, defining marriage as a union between a man and a woman and challenging the recent California Supreme Court
decision allowing for same-sex marriage.
This vote comes after months of campaigning on both sides, with communications and money playing major roles for both camps.
No on Proposition 8, which raised more than $38 million, had the support of several celebrities, including
Brad Pitt,
Chelsea Handler, and actors from
Ugly Betty.
Protect Marriage, which raised more than $32 million, used
family values messages in its communications. Both sides hosted rallies and used social networking to spread the message.
