PRWeek Awards highlight industry's progress

Last night's PRWeek Awards were a wonderful chance to celebrate best practice in PR and excellence in communications, as over 1,000 people gathered in New York City for the industry's big night of the year.

Last night's PRWeek Awards were a wonderful chance to celebrate best practice in PR and excellence in communications, as over 1,000 people gathered in New York City for the industry's big night of the year.

The buzz in the room was palpable as the presentations grew nearer and it was clear this was one set of awards where everyone really cared about winning and who else won. Big respect goes out to Ketchum for capturing the coveted PRWeek Campaign of the Year for the third year running, for its Mattel/Barbie work - an unprecedented achievement.

Edelman also had a great evening and captured five awards, including Large Agency of the Year. The evening got even better for the Daniel Edelman-founded company when subsidiary Zeno added PR Agency of the Year to its Midsize Agency of the Year award.

But it wasn't just the large operators that went home happy. One of the biggest smiles on display during the evening was sported by PRWeek's December cover star Elaine Driscoll, director of communications at the Boston Police Department, which was the recipient of In-House PR Team of the Year.

Loudest cheer of the night came when Coyne PR's Andrew Testa was named Young PR Professional of the Year, as CEO Tom Coyne had treated every member of his agency to a night out at the awards. I'm sure Andrew won't forget in a hurry his walk of fame to collect the prize while receiving a standing ovation from 100 of his colleagues. Coyne was further recognized by an Honorable Mention in the Midsize Agency category.

Other very happy people included a slightly shell-shocked looking Marian Salzman from Euro RSCG Worldwide PR, who beat off intensely strong competition to become PR Professional of the Year; and PR Student of the Year Alyssa Vande Leest from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, who received $5,000 and an internship at Hill & Knowlton as a prize to add to her trophy and a well-deserved round of applause.

All in all it was a great night, and a fitting way to recognize the magnificent work carried out in our sector that is propelling PR and communications far beyond marketing into the realms of strategic counsel and business and organizational advice.

Congratulations to all the winners and shortlisted entries, and thanks to our judges, sponsors and everyone who attended last night - I hope your heads aren't too sore this morning.
