Edelman uses Facebook to organize team post-Sandy

Following the destruction of Hurricane Sandy on Monday night, which left more than 827,000 people in New York City powerless as of Thursday afternoon, Edelman used Facebook to connect with employees in New York and New Jersey.

Following the destruction of Hurricane Sandy on Monday night, which left more than 827,000 people in New York City powerless as of Thursday afternoon, Edelman used Facebook to connect with employees in New York and New Jersey.

The agency's Washington DC digital team created the private Facebook page for staffers on Wednesday night and launched it Thursday morning. More than 320 employees have so far joined the page, which was designed to help employees engage each other and offer spare bedrooms to those without power.

Russell Dubner, president of Edelman New York, said the Facebook page was created after a slew of employees emailed the senior management team at the agency to say they have free space or food for people who need it. 

“The idea was borne from a need and then borne from the fact that it would be much easier having people help each other rather than us trying to play the middleman,” he explained.  

In addition to the Facebook page, Edelman sent out a quick survey to its employees to ask if they'd be interested in working at a remote location, Dubner said. Once the results came in, the firm decided to open workstations at hotels in Westchester, Brooklyn, and Midtown.
