NEW YORK: Bloomberg has hired Burson-Marsteller corporate practice leader Jason Schechter as chief communications officer.

Schechter, who started in the role this week, will oversee Bloomberg's global communications strategy. He was previously chair of the US corporate practice at Burson since 2010, where he led a team of 80 and counseled companies across the financial services, technology, media, and professional services industries.

Prior to joining Burson in 2007, Schechter was an SVP at Robinson Lerer & Montgomery, which merged last year with Finsbury Group to become RLM Finsbury. He also served as assistant press secretary and official spokesman for President Bill Clinton.

Schechter replaces Rick Powell, who joined PR and public affairs firm Teneo Strategy as president earlier this year. Schechter reports to CEO and president Dan Doctoroff and Kevin Sheekey, head of government relations and corporate communications at Bloomberg and chairman of Bloomberg Government.

This story was updated on December 12 with more information about Powell and Bloomberg's reporting structure.
