Microsoft scored a big
victory in the war to dominate the video game space when the company announced its Xbox 360 game has outsold Nintendo's Wii and Sony's Playstation to reach 10 million unit sales in the United States.
"History has shown us that the first company to reach 10 million in console sales wins the generation battle," Don Mattrick, a Microsoft senior vice president who heads the company's Xbox business, said in a statement.
The Xbox's impressive sales figures were likely helped by the build up to the April 29 release of
Grand Theft Auto IV following a highly-controlled PR effort last month. Last year Microsoft also launched a multimillion-dollar marketing push around
Halo 3 for the Xbox 360 and helped generate a record-setting $170 million in sales for the property. But while the Xbox dominates US sales, the Wii is the
current global winner - having sold 25.8 million units worldwide compared to 18.9 million units for the Xbox.
