The McCain campaign faced a busy holiday weekend between hurricane Gustav, preparations for the Republican National Convention, and news that his running mate, Sarah Palin, has an unmarried, pregnant 17-year-old daughter.

The Huffington Post reports that the campaign dispatched a team of a dozen communications operatives and lawyers to Alaska, Palin's state, but the move, happening shortly after the announcement, raised suspicions that the camp did not conduct a complete review of Palin. McCain's campaign denied the dispatch was related to the pregnancy, and adviser Steve Schmidt told the Huffington Post, "Life happens."
