There's no shortage of news regarding newspapers and the
companies that own them, but not much of it is good news. Newspaper circulation
fell
3.6% over the six months ending March 2008, although
USA Today and the
Wall Street
Journal reported
gains of less than 1%. The
New York Times
fell 3.85% and the
Los Angeles Times dropped
5.13%, according to the Audit Bureau of Circulations. Meanwhile, the
Orange County Register announced
it will lay off 5% of its workforce, while the
Boston Globe accepted the buyout
applications of 23 employees. Newspaper revenues at EW Scripps were
down
8.3%, but earnings were
up
23%, while AH Belo
lost $8.7
million during the first quarter.
