A Texas woman
sued video rental company Blockbuster for allegedly sharing personal information with Facebook through the company's Beacon marketing program, the
Associated Press reported. Cathryn Elaine Harris claims that Blockbuster violated the Video Privacy Protection Act when it disclosed customer information about her video rentals and purchases to the Web site,. Blockbuster countered that its Facebook partnership includes sufficient privacy protection.
The program, which tracks purchases made and sends alerts about the transactions to Facebook users' friends, drew complaints from users when it was first launched in November. Now, rather than having to opt-out of the program, users must opt-in to the program if they want it.
